Judo started out in life as an art called Jujuitsu, meaning "the art of fighting". Where they used weapons such as swords, bows, spears and with their bare hands. However in 1882 a man called Jigora Kano re-thought the techniques of Jujitsu. He took out the use of weapons and also the hand a foot strikes and called the new sport "Judo" which means "the gentle way"

The first Judo club in Britain was opened in 1918 by a Japanese man called Gunji Koizumi, he named it "the Budokwai".
